This book provides a basic introduction to English grammar, with a particular focus on syntax. Unlike other major introductory textbooks, it combines insights from generative and cognitive linguistics and emphasises the need for a prototype-based description of traditional grammatical categories. In doing so, it avoids creating the impression that linguistic analysis always yields straightforward ‘right’ or ‘wrong’ answers. The text is accompanied by a variety of exercises intended to encourage students to engage in linguistic analysis and research.
Cristiano Broccias is a Full Professor of English Linguistics at the University of Genoa. He holds a PhD in Linguistics from the University of Pavia. His doctoral thesis was published as The English Change Network: Forcing Changes into Schemas (2003). His main research and teaching interests are English syntax and phonology, the history of English and cognitive theories of language. He has published widely on Cognitive Grammar, change constructions, ditransitive verbs, temporal constructions, adverbs and metonymy.
