This publication brings together seven texts on colours from the Western Middle Ages, in particular recipes explaining how to make pigments, as well as encyclopaedic and heraldic material relating to colours. The recipes, written in various Romance languages, but also Latin and English, have been edited here for the first time by a team of scholars. Each text is accompanied by a short introduction and a critical apparatus of notes, in addition to a complete list of technical terms used to designate colours and to refer to the technical procedures of their making. The editions are preceded by an opening essay on the state of the art of colour recipes in the Middle Ages. The volume also contains an index of manuscripts containing such recipes and an index nominum.
